LAB RESULTS, HOW TO ENSURE YOU WILL GET YOURS...

Ever been to your doctor and asked for your lab results and they aren't in your chart? This is because while most office run on some type of EMR (Electronic Medical Record), those EMR's don't connect with one another.  So if you had labs done at your PCP (Primary Care Physicians) office and didn't ask them to forward them to your Cardiologist, Endocrinologist, Hematologist, etc. The only person seeing the blood work will be your PCP.

If you have blood work done at a lab such as Quest Diagnostic or a Beaumont Lab these labs will get mailed or faxed to  ONLY the ordering physician.  If any of your physicians have access to EPIC, (The EMR that Beaumont uses) then they will be able to access your records.  Unfortunately Quest labs don't have don't have a system physician's can access from their offices, so the only way a specific physician will get your results is if you tell Quest where to send them.

In review, Labs taken at:
Physicians office:  Ask them to send labs to every physician office you think may need or want them

Quest Diagnostic:  Ask them to send labs to every physician office you think may need or want them

Beaumont Lab:   Ask them to send labs to every physician office you think may need or want them (Just to be certain)

MEET OUR MHG PHYSICIAN EXTENDERS, AN EXTENSION OF YOUR HEART CARE TEAM! THIS MONTH WE RECOGNIZE MARIANN GRAHAM

Beaumont Michigan Heart Group would like to introduce you to our physician extenders.  They are a critical part of the Cardiology team at Michigan Heart Group.  The Physician Extenders work hand and hand with the physicians, making decisions on the best treatment options for each patient on a case by case basis.  All of our extenders round on the weekends as well as work in the hospital during the week.  Most of our extenders also have office hours and we encourage our patients to feel comfortable following up with them in the office.  Our medical decisions are often a team approach that each extender is a part of and they are often at the forefront of each decision that is made.

The practice is made up of Interventionist (plumbers) and Electrophysiologist (electricians).  The plumbers are located at 4600 Investment Drive, #200, while the Electricians are in the building next door at 4550 Investment Dr., #250.  In addition Michigan Heart Group has two satellite offices to accommodate our out of town patients.  One in Macomb at 15959 Hall Road, #304, Macomb and another in Novi at Ten Mile and Haggerty, 39500 Ten Mile, #103, Novi. Each extender is trained and familiar with both specialties.

Each month we will be focusing on one extenders achievements, this month we recognize Mariann Graham

Mariann Graham, R.N., BSN: Mariann joined Michigan Heart Group in March 1997, and we are thankful she did.  Mariann has a Bachelor of Nursing from Mercy; she has 25 years of Cardiac care experience and is the heart of the Michigan Heart Group team.  She is the director of the Physician Extenders, the Medical Assistants and Nursing.  She keeps the whole boat running and running smoothly.  If someone is sick... Mariann steps in, if someone is running late... Mariann steps in, if someone needs to leave...Mariann steps in.  You will most likely see Mariann at either of the hospitals rounding.  She doesn't have office hours but may be seen helping a physician running behind by seeing you before they step in.

OUR EXTENDER TEAM AND WHERE YOU MAY SEE THEM:

Cheryl Vincent, APRN:  Sees patients at Michigan Heart Rhythm Group all day Thursday and Friday.  Also, sees patients at William Beaumont Hospital- Troy, covers Beaumont RO when needed.

HEART HEALTHY RECIPE- SMOKY RED BELL PEPPER HUMMUS

Serves 8
¼ cup per serving (plus 4½ cups chickpeas remaining)

Slow cooker size/shape
3 to 4½ quart round or oval

Slow cooking time
10 hours on low

§  1 pound dried chickpeas, sorted for stones and shriveled chickpeas, rinsed, and drained
§  6 cups water
§  3 tablespoons sesame seeds, dry roasted
§  3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
§  2 tablespoons fat-free plain Greek yogurt
§  3 tablespoons water
§  1 teaspoon olive oil and 1 teaspoon olive oil (extra virgin preferred), divided use
§  2 medium garlic cloves, minced
§  2 medium strips of lemon peel (each about 3 inches by ½ inch)
§  ¼ to ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
§  ¼ teaspoon salt
§  1 medium roasted red bell pepper, quartered, drained if bottled

Slow cooking the chickpeas results in extra creaminess so we went ahead and called for cooking a pound of them, even though you need about a third of that for this Middle Eastern spread.  Serve the hummus on whole-grain pita wedges or with crudités, then enjoy the bonus chickpeas in soups, stews and green salads.

Fill a large saucepan ¾ full of water (not the 6 cups in the ingredients list).  Bring to a boil over high heat.  Stir in the chickpeas.  Return to a boil.  Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.  Pour the chickpeas into a colander and rinse.

Pour the chickpeas into the slow cooker.  Pour in 6 cups water.  Cook, covered, on low for 10 hours, adding more water if needed to keep the chickpeas covered.  Be sure to quickly add the water and re-cover the slow cooker each time.

Measure out 2 cups of the cooked chickpeas for the hummus.  Transfer the remaining 4 ½ cups to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 6 months for other uses.

To prepare the hummus, process the sesame seeds in a food processor or blender for 30 seconds.  Add, in order, the lemon juice, yogurt, remaining 3 tablespoons water, 1 teaspoon oil, garlic, lemon peel, paprika, salt, 2 cups cooked chickpeas, and roasted pepper.  Process until smooth.

Serve warm or transfer to an airtight container and cover and refrigerate until serving time.  Just before serving, drizzle the hummus with the remaining 1 teaspoon oil.

Tip on roasted bell peppers: To prepare roasted bell peppers, preheat the broiler.  Spray a broiler pan and rack with cooking spray.  Broil the bell pepper on the broiler pan about 4 inches from the heat, turning until the pepper is charred all over.  Put the pepper in a small bowl and let stand, covered, for at least 5 minutes.  (It won’t hurt the pepper to stand for as long as 20 minutes.)  Rinse the pepper with cold water, removing and discarding the blackened skin, ribs, seeds, and stem.  Blot the pepper dry.

Tip on dry-roasting seeds:  To dry-roast seeds, such as the sesame seeds here, put them in a single layer in a small skillet.  Cook over medium heat for about 4 minutes, or until the seeds darken and begin to pop, stirring frequently.  Remove them from the skillet so they don’t burn.
